Creating Musical Theater: A Collaborative Lab
DATE: November 18, 2019 - May 24, 2020
TIME: Mondays, 7:30pm - 9:30pm
GRoW @ The Wallis is pleased to offer a unique opportunity for creative teams of writers/composers developing new musicals to receive intensive coaching to take a project they have started to the next level. Co-led by Stormy Sacks and Randy Brenner, the main goal of the program is to help participants experience the collaborative process required to bring a new musical from an idea to the stage.
The program is intended for emerging artists who have not yet had their work produced in a professional setting. Up to three teams - each comprised of 2-3 people - will be selected for the program. Coaching sessions will take place at The Wallis in Beverly Hills Monday evenings from 7:30 – 9:30pm from November 2019 – May 2020. In between their weekly coaching sessions, the creative teams will be expected to continue to refine their work.
To be considered, creative teams of two or three people should submit a proposed project including musical composition(s), lyrics, and a book or story outline. Three teams will be selected for the program. Selection will be based on the potential demonstrated in the work submitted and the extent to which the participants would most benefit from this opportunity.
After several months to further develop their pieces, the course participants and faculty will work together to audition professional actors to perform the new musicals and assist in the development process. This will include table reads, scene work in class, and a staged reading at The Wallis for selected portions of each show. Legendary Broadway composer Stephen Schwartz will be invited to visit the class to provide feedback for each of the shows in development. A public showcase performance of portions of each show will be presented at The Wallis in the Lovelace Studio Theater on May 24, 2020.
Tuition for the course is $400 per participant. Scholarships are available based on financial need.
Application Deadline: November 17, 2019.

The Wallis invites intermediate to advanced dancers to a special master class with BODYTRAFFIC during their upcoming engagement. This class will take place on Saturday June 2ndon stage in the Bram Goldsmith Theater from 2:00-3:30pm. Lillian Barbeito will lead dancers in Countertechnique, a groundbreaking movement system developed by Anouk van Dijk to help dancers have a long, healthy and happy career.

About Countertechnique: By continuously and sequentially directing and counter directing parts of the body through space, Countertechnique allows the moving dancer to work with an ever changing dynamic balance. This dynamic balance reduces the pressure on the overall body structure and can be changed at any given moment. The consistent use of the counter direction in all movements is key to the technique; both the awareness and application of this principle is trained throughout the Countertechnique class.
About Lillian Rose Barbeito: Lillian Rose Barbeito is the Co-Director of BODYTRAFFIC. She is a native of Santa Fe, New Mexico where she trained with the Santa Fe Dance Foundation and worked with The Santa Fe Chamber Musical Festival, Southwest Ballet, and Santa Fe Opera. She received a BFA from The Julliard School where she studied on a 4 year, full-tuition scholarship awarded by Tomorrow’s Leaders of America.
As a dancer, Lillian had an extensive performance career that took her to Europe, New York, and then finally to Los Angeles, where she founded BODYTRAFFIC with Tina Berkett. The company’s repertory includes work by Kyle Abraham, Sidra Bell, Stijn Celis, Barak Marshall, Andrea Miller, Richard Siegal, Guy Weizman and Roni Haver, Anton Lachky, Matthew Neenan, Victor Quijada, Arthur Pita, and Hofesh Shechter.

The Wallis is pleased to offer a unique interdisciplinary small ensemble performance course for advanced instrumental students ages 16-20 studying jazz and/or classical music. Students will have the opportunity to work on jazz and classical repertoire, as well as on improvisation. The goal is for students to grow their ability to work across genres. It will also provide a general overview of the history of small ensembles in both genres through supplementary listening material. Students will have several opportunities to attend performances and interact with guest artists performing at The Wallis. This class will culminate with a final performance in the Lovelace Studio Theater, which will include a world premiere of original composition written for the class.
The targeted size for this course is ten students total.
This course will start on Monday evening, March 7 with approximately 12 sessions on Monday night plus special events with select classical and jazz artists performing at The Wallis. These will take place on other days of the week. A schedule will be provided at the start of the course.
We are looking for advanced musicians, ages 16-20, who are interested in exploring the connections and overlap between classical chamber music and jazz. The Wallis is pleased to offer scholarships to students who need financial assistance. To be considered, a parent or guardian should submit a letter to The Wallis explaining the financial hardship and requesting specific monetary support.
